For Immediate Release:

"Celebrate the Woman in Your Life" on May 6th and help end violence against women.

The Assaulted Women's Helpline (AWHL) kicks off its inaugural fundraiser "Celebrate the Woman in Your Life" on May 6th at the Sutton Place Hotel. This spectacular evening features fine dinning, Yuk Yuk's Kate Davis, and the African and Caribbean sounds of Creole Drummatix.

Guests can also enjoy a relaxing message or make-up application in the Pampering Zone and do some last minute Mother's Day gift shopping at the silent auction. All proceeds from this event will go to the Assaulted Women's Helpline and the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses (OAITH.)

Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in this country. According to Statistics Canada, more than half of Canadian women over the age of 16 have been victims of physical or sexual violence.

"Better education and resources are essential to eliminating this problem," Huong Pham, AWHL Executive Director. "Last year the Helpline was expanded from servicing the GTA to servicing the province and calls went up by almost 50 per cent. Demand for this kind of service continues to grow but we hope with events like this we can raise awareness and funds to meet existing needs and help put an end to violence against women."

Tickets for this extraordinary evening are $75.00 per person or $750.00 per table and can be purchased by calling (416) 364-4144 Ext. 233. Come join us and bring a mother, sister, partner, or friend and celebrate all the women in your life.

The Assaulted Women's Helpline offers a toll-free and TTY telephone crisis line to all women in the province of Ontario who have experienced abuse. AWHL provides counselling, emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals to as many as 50,000 callers annually. This critical service is confidential, free of charge, and offered in more than 150 languages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
