For Immediate Release:

On April 27th, the Assaulted Women's Helpline invites you to celebrate the women in your life

(Toronto, April 3, 2007)-The Assaulted Women's Helpline (AWHL) is pleased to announce its fourth annual "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" fundraiser on April 27th at the Four Seasons Hotel. This special evening features the multi-talented Latin-jazz songstress Amanda Martinez, festive performances from Folklorico Filipino Dance, free massage, fine dining, door prizes and an amazing silent auction.

Violence against women and their children continues to be a serious problem in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, more than 50% of Canadian women over the age of 16 have experienced violence.

"Women in this country continue to live with abuse everyday," says Huong Pham, executive director for AWHL. "The Assaulted Women's Helpline is an essential service and receives more than 49,000 calls each year. It is imperative that we continue to increase awareness about violence against women and to raise funds to ensure that all Helpline calls are answered."

Since 1985 the Assaulted Women's Helpline has offered a toll-free crisis line to women in Ontario who are being abused or know someone who is being abused. The Helpline provides crisis counselling, emotional support, safety planning, information, and referrals in up to 154 languages. This life-saving service allows women to call for help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, assured of their anonymity and confidentiality.

Treat yourself and a loved one to an extraordinary evening designed to celebrate the women in your life. You can buy tickets for the event at $100 per person by calling (416) 364-4144, ext. 233. The presenting sponsor for this event is Bell and all proceeds from the event will go directly to the Assaulted Women's Helpline.
