/ Press Releases For Immediate Release:(Toronto, April 6, 2006) -- The Assaulted Women's Helpline (AWHL) is holding its third annual "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" fundraiser on May 12th at the Four Seasons Hotel. This special evening features the singing talents of Juno award winner Susan Aglukark, the rhythmic movements of the Nouvel Expose African Dance Troupe, fine dining and a silent auction. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Assaulted Women's Helpline. Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in this country. Just last month, near Toronto, a woman and her two young children were murdered by her estranged husband. According to Statistics Canada, 7 percent of Canadian women (measured over a 5-year period) experienced spousal abuse by a current or previous partner. This represents 653,000 Canadian women. "Women in this country continue to live with violence on a day-to day basis. They can live in fear for their lives," says Sandra Diaz, the event's organizer. "The Assaulted Women's Helpline provides these women with access to essential services such as emotional support and safety planning so that they can make safe choices for themselves and their children." Tickets for this extraordinary evening are $100.00 per person or $1000 per table and can be purchased by calling (416) 364-4144 Ext. 233. Please join us and bring a mother, sister, partner, or friend to celebrate all the women in your life. Since 1985 the Assaulted Women's Helpline has offered a toll-free telephone crisis line to women in the province of Ontario who experience abuse. AWHL provides counselling, emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals in up to 154 languages. This life-saving service allows women to reach out for help free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, assured of their anonymity and confidentiality.
