Media Releases For Immediate Release: Toronto, May 2, 2005 This year, the Assaulted Women's Helpline celebrates its 20th Anniversary with its first ever public awareness campaign entitled "Names". The commercial will kick off on May 8th following the AWHL's charity gala "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" which takes place on May 6th. Ambient print media will follow. "When Sandra Diaz, Manager of Resource Development approached Leo Burnett to undertake this pro bono project, it was very hard to refuse." said Kelly Zettel and Arthur Shah, joint Creative Group Heads. "It presented both a fantastic creative opportunity as well as the chance to raise AWHL's awareness amongst Ontarians in a dynamic and meaningful way." According to Statistics Canada, more than 50% of Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of violence since age 16; a woman is harmed, maimed or injured every minute of everyday due to abuse. AWHL offers a toll-free telephone crisis line to all women in Ontario who experience abuse. They provide counselling, emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals in up to 154 languages. This life-saving service allows women to reach out for help, free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in total confidence. "It is remarkable how the team at Leo Burnett and their suppliers, Radke, Crush, Panic & Bob, Eggplant, Fade to Black, MIJO as well as the talented performers in the commercial pulled the project together so professionally." said Diaz. "We are confident that the commercial will remind women of how prevalent and distructive verbal abuse really is and inspire them to seek help from the crisis line."
