For Immediate Release:

April 14, 2005
On May 6th enjoy the circus, feel the samba grove, and help end violence against women.

The Assaulted Women's Helpline (AWHL) is holding its second annual "Celebrate the Women in Your Life" gala on May 6th at the Four Seasons Hotel. The evening features fine dining, a spellbinding performance by Zero Gravity Circus, the world sounds of the Samba Squad, and will premiere AWHL's first public service announcement entitled "Names."

Guests can also enjoy a relaxing message or make-up application in the Pampering Zone and do some last minute Mother's Day gift shopping at the silent auction. This event is generously sponsored by Bell Mobility, Franklin Templeton Investments and Summerfresh Foods. All proceeds from this event will go to the Assaulted Women's Helpline.

Violence against women continues to be a serious problem in this country. According to Statistics Canada, more women are injured or killed by abuse than by car crashes and muggings combined.

"The Assaulted Women's Helpline is an essential service" said Sandra Diaz, the event's organizer. "Every year the Helpline answers more than 40,000 calls. It is imperative that we continue to increase awareness about violence against women and to raise funds to ensure that all Helpline calls are answered."

Tickets for this extraordinary evening are $100.00 per person or $1000.00 per table and can be purchased by calling (416) 364-4144 Ext. 233. Please join us and bring a mother, sister, partner, or friend to celebrate all the women in your life.

Since 1985 the Assaulted Women's Helpline has offered a toll-free telephone crisis line to all women in the province of Ontario who experience abuse. We provide counselling, emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals in up to 154 languages. This life-saving service allows women to reach out for help free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, assured of their anonymity and confidentiality.
